Local AFA chapter honored for contributions to Wi-Fi in dorms
McGHEE TYSON AIR NATIONAL GUARD BASE, Tenn. - --
Members of the local Gen. Bruce K. Holloway Air Force Association (AFA) Chapter were honored for their contributions to the new wireless internet capability at the lodging facilities of the McGhee Tyson Inn during a ceremony held here, Sept. 1.
The local AFA chapter was instrumental in bringing this resource to the more than 4,200 service members who attend training here each year.
For years, students have requested commercial internet access. The ability to do research, communicate with friends and family, complete on-line college school work, and manage personal finances was a top priority for them.
"We felt this was one way we really could help out the morale and welfare of our troops," said retired Brig. Gen Jim Mungenast, president of the local AFA chapter.
More than a year ago in June 2010, his organization donated $2,000 toward the effort and set the ball in motion.
What followed was extensive research, discussions with vendors, numerous meetings with leadership from the Training and Education Center, the 134th Air Refueling Wing, and the McGhee Tyson Inn, and, finally, installation of the equipment.
"This has been an incredibly huge effort," said Chief Master Sgt. Donald E. Felch, commandant of the Paul H. Lankford Enlisted Professional Military Education Center. "With everybody coming together for one goal...to improve the quality of life of people who are living in lodging here at McGhee Tyson."
"That is just part and parcel of what we at AFA want to do," said Mungenast. "We firmly believe in the mission here. We are proud of what you all do and we're proud to be part of the Air Force efforts in this area."
The Air Force Association is an independent, nonprofit, civilian education organization that promotes public understanding of aerospace power and the pivotal role it plays in the security of the nation. AFA also supports the United States Air Force, the Air Force family, and aerospace education.
