Early assembly

MCGHEE TYSON AIR NATIONAL GUARD BASE, Tenn. – More than 120 officer candidates assemble for an early, unknown event. The Academy of Military Science (AMS) opened its doors April 12, 1971 as the Officer Preparatory Academy. It was renamed in 1973. Accreditation granted in 1986 was retroactive to the school’s inception with three semester hours in Management-Leadership and Communications and one semester hour in Defense Studies. MCGHEE TYSON AIR NATIONAL GUARD BASE, Tenn. – An invitation to Air National Guard Col. Edmund Morrisey invites him to his Order of the Sword ceremony March 20, 1990 and is displayed here in Morrisey Hall. Morrisey was the sixth Air National Guard officer to ever receive the non-commissioned officer corps’ honor and is the only Air National Guard colonel and its lowest ranking officer to ever be awarded it. MCGHEE TYSON AIR NATIONAL GUARD BASE, Tenn. – Memorabilia of U.S. Air National Guard Brig. Gen. William W. Spruance is displayed in the atrium of Spruance Hall here at the I.G. Brown Training and Education Center. The lighter is emblazed with the shield of the Delaware Air National Guard, of which Spruance is credited as a charter member who helped establish the organization. He was named the first assistant adjutant general for air, Delaware National Guard, with the rank of brigadier general, in 1956, and retired from that post in 1976. The building holds classrooms for enlisted professional military education through the Paul H. Lankford EPME Center. Col. Edmund C. Morrisey

MCGHEE TYSON AIR NATIONAL GUARD BASE, Tenn. – U.S. Air National Guard Col. Edmund C. Morrisey, commandant of the first Noncommissioned Officer Academy class here and the I.G. Brown Training and Education Center’s founding commander. Morrisey was born in New Haven, Conn., and received his Bachelor of Arts degree in history and education from Trinity College in 1952. He also pursued graduate studies at Trinity and is a graduate of the Industrial College of the Armed Forces, Air Command and Staff College, the Defense Strategy Seminar and Academic Instructors School. MCGHEE TYSON AIR NATIONAL GUARD BASE, Tenn. – The Prisoner of War Medal, Distinguished Service Medal and Purple Heart Medal earned by U.S. Air National Guard Chief Master Sgt. Paul H. Lankford are displayed in Morrisey Hall at the I.G. Brown Training and Education Center’s enlisted professional military education center dedicated in his name. Displays pay tribute to the EPME Center’s first deputy commandant who survived the infamous Death March of Bataan as a prisoner of war for 42 months. Lankford helped establish and graduate the first Noncommissioned Officer Academy class in 1968. Later, he helped establish Airman Leadership School and the Academy of Military Science here. KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Ninety-four U.S. Air National Guard officer candidate students enrolled in the Academy of Military Science at The I. G. Brown Training and Education Center, McGhee Tyson Air National Guard Base, march in the Veterans Day Parade in downtown Knoxville Nov. 11, 2008. After 38 years and more than 14,600 officers commissioned, AMS moved the six-week course to Maxwell Air Force Base, Ala., in 2009 to form a partnership with the Air Force's Officer Training School. Campus construction

MCGHEE TYSON AIR NATIONAL GUARD BASE, Tenn. –The I.G. Brown Training and Education Center began a $9.5 million construction project in the late ‘80s for its current classroom building, a NCOA dormitory, a multi-purpose building and a multi-media building, which were dedicated in October 1991. Additional construction then began that fall of three more dorms, an administrative building, a drill pad and running track, making what is today’s modern campus. Lt. Gen. John Conaway Library

MCGHEE TYSON AIR NATIONAL GUARD BASE, Tenn. – A photo shows books being moved from Spruance Hall at the I.G. Brown Training and Education Center campus to the classroom building. The Center’s Lt. Gen. John Conaway Library was moved in 1996 to make additional room for the TEC TV broadcast studio and the distance learning program. Staff assisted in the downsizing process, weeding 3,600 obsolete books from the shelves and moving the remaining 3,320 books on pallets.
